Substance Abuse And Recovery While Social Distancing

On Thursday, we rang in the pre-New Year welcoming Dr. Michael Murphy, a Harvard-trained psychiatrist and the Executive Medical Director of River Oaks Treatment Center, a full service, comprehensive addiction and mental health center near Tampa, Florida to the show.

Dr. Murphy talked quite a bit about not only his background, but also what he’s seen during 2020, with the difficulties for those in recovery having their in-person meetings taken away, or folks who are working from home finding themselves drinking, or using drugs, during the day once, twice, and before you know it, they’ve developed a habit that has overwhelmed them, etc.

Dr. Murphy shared his own views on identifying the underlying trauma in some cases, or the thing that may be causing the addiction, whether it be from childhood, or the loss of a job, etc. As Tiffany said “It’s not like someone picks up that first drink and says ‘I think I’ll become an alcoholic'”. It’s, obviously, ore complicated than that. If it were that simple, we wouldn’t have the epidemic of addiction that we do.

If you, or someone you know is struggling, please take a look, and then consider finding some help for yourself.
